Navigating the CPD Deadline: A Guide for Dentists

As the year winds down, it's that time again for dentists to gear up for the CPD deadline and annual renewal. With the deadline of December 31 2023, approaching, it's crucial to ensure that all your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements are met to renew your General Dental Council (GDC) registration. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate through the process smoothly.

What You Need to Do:

  1. Complete Your CPD: Ensure you complete your CPD by December 31. Any CPD done on or after January 1 counts toward the following year.

  2. Verifiable CPD Hours: Make sure you've completed at least 10 hours of verifiable CPD in the last two years, unless you're in the first year of your first cycle.

  3. Annual Renewal Fee (ARF): Pay your Annual Retention Fee (ARF) through your eGDC account.

  4. Indemnity Declaration: Make an indemnity declaration.

  5. CPD Statement: Submit a CPD statement and, if mid-cycle, ensure it's compliant. If you've just finished a five-year cycle, submit a compliant end-of-cycle CPD statement.

Top Tips:

  • CPD Statement Deadline: You can edit your CPD Statement declaration until January 28, 2023, providing ample time to manage your CPD portfolio and Personal Development Plan.

  • Early Renewal: Complete the Annual Renewal process well before December 31 to avoid last-minute issues.

  • Confirmation: Check that your registration has been successful by receiving a confirmation email and verifying your status on the GDC register.

  • Grace Period: If you can't complete your minimum CPD hours towards the end of your cycle, contact the GDC for a possible 56-day grace period.

Personal Development Plan (PDP): A Key Element of CPD

A PDP is your roadmap for personal, educational, and career development. It helps you:

  • Identify your skills.

  • Become self-aware of your learning needs.

  • Plan new skills to develop.

  • Focus on strengths and weaknesses.

  • Reflect upon your learning.

The GDC requires the following information in your PDP:

  1. CPD relevant to your practice.

  2. Anticipated development outcomes for each activity.

  3. Timeframes for completing your CPD over the cycle.

  4. Adjustment of PDP throughout the cycle.
